Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Cavs v. Lakers. Lebron v. Kobe. Clash of the Titans. Optimus Prime v. Megatron. Godzilla against the Smog Monster. Ali against Frazier. Mano y mano. Manos de Piedra. Fight to the finish. They’re strong to the finish ’cause they eat their the spinach. Kobe and LeBron are just one set of today’s great sports match ups. Let’s take at look at the lot of ‘em. Shall we? Yes, we shall.
Kobe v. LeBron: This is the one that gets everybody’s goat. The one that floats everybody’s boat. The one that grabs you by the throat. I hear all the time that at the end of the game they want the ball in Kobe’s hands. Know this sports fans, in the fourth quarter or overtime with less than ten seconds, he is 18/78 for his career. 23.1%. He’s missed his last three such shots. That’s who you want with the ball in hands? Give me LebRon. Give me the guy you have to tackle to prevent from scoring. Give me the best athlete in the world.
Sidney Crosby v. Alexander Ovechkin: The last time these two cats faced each other, Alexander Ovechkin finally got the better of Sid the Kid. Both on the scoreboard and in the box score. The Capitals beat the Penguins, 6-3. Alexander Ovechkin put the biscuit in the basket twice. Get the papers, get the papers. Alexander Ovechkin notched two assists. For those of you at home keeping score, that makes three points in hockey talk.
Big deal you say? Who cares you say? I say Sid the Kid only had two points. I say it was only the second time in thirteen career head-to-head games that Ovechkin had more points than Crosby. I say, in their previous twelve close encounters, Crosby had more points than Ovechkin eight times and three times they had the same total. I say, you don’t need a weatherman
to know which way the wind blows. I say, look out Kid, you’re gonna get hit.
Peyton Manning v. Tom Brady: I know, I know. Brady didn’t even play this season. I don’t care. It’s these two and everybody else. Talk about your gunslingers. Walking down the road with a pistol in your waist. Johnny, you’re too bad. Tom Brady’s too bad. He’s got the hardware. Cover of Vanity Fair. Tough as a big ole bear. Sorry, Stephen Colbert. Peyton Manning’s too bad. That guy’s pretty good. If you like six-five, 230-pound quarterbacks with a laser rocket arm. This is the NFL match-up that beats all the others. I salute you my brothers.
Who’s better? It’s the best sports debate we have. It transcends sport. It rivals Ginger vs. Mary Ann. It rivals Locke vs. Jack. It rivals Superman vs. Batman. Rivals them, and beats them. Hands down. When these two guys square off, a nation watches. Are you ready for some football? Oh, by the way, you know who I’m picking. Right? Right?
Johan Santana v. Roy Halladay: I like Johan. I like him a lot. What’s not to like? I like Roy Halladay better. Roy Halladay don’t need no stinkin’ pitch count. Harry Leroy Halladay. Harry Leroy Halladay don’t get tired. Ya heard? Don’t get tired. Since 2000, Harry Leroy Halladay has the most complete games in baseball. More than Livian Hernandez. More that Randy Johnson. More than a lot of folks. He’s led baseball three out of the last five years. A gaggle of complete games. Rockin’ Robin Roberts would be proud. So would Kid Nichols. So would Warren Spahn. Greg Maddux. Those guys there. So would Dave Steib and Jim Clancy. When all is said and done, Halladay will go down as the greatest Blue Jays pitcher ever. When all is said and done, he will go down as one of the all time greats, period.
