Stat Of The Day

Stat Of The Day:  His reputation preceded him before he got here.  Johan Santana beat the Nationals last night.   Johan Santana kept the Mets a half-game behind the Fightin’ Phils in the N.L. Beast.  Johan Santana is the best pitcher in baseball.  Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia be damned.  Damn the torpedoes.

Since the Fourth of July, Johan Santana is 7-0.  Since the Fourth of July, Johan Santana has a 2.26 ERA.  Since the Fourth of July, Johan Santana has started fifteen games and not lost once.  Not once.  You shouldn’t kick me in the balls, Mrs. Kelly.  My sister kicked me in the balls once…Once!  Who cares you say?  Big deal you say?  I say, those fifteen consecutive starts without a loss is the second-longest unbeaten streak in one season by a Mets starter.  Yowza!  Doctor K had an eighteen-start stretch in 1985 in which he was 14-0 with four no-decisions.  By season’s end, Johan could be first.

Not for nothing, in 1985, Doc may have been the best pitcher we’ve ever seen.  The best there’s ever been.  Better than Dizzy Dean.  Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
